What Are the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)?

BS 7671 ensures electrical installations are safe, efficient, and compliant. It covers protection against electric shock, fire, and thermal effects, and provides guidance on wiring systems and equipment selection.
Although BS 7671 is non-statutory, following it helps meet legal obligations under:

• Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
• Building Regulations Part
• Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002

The HSE confirms that compliance with BS 7671 is “likely to achieve compliance” with these laws.

Scope of BS 7671

BS 7671 applies to:

• Domestic, commercial, and industrial premises
• Public spaces and special installations (e.g., medical locations)
• Low-voltage and extra-low-voltage systems for power, control, and ICT

If you design, install, maintain, or inspect electrical systems—or work in trades like HVAC or renewables—BS 7671 applies to you.

18th Edition Amendment 4 Overview and Release Date

Amendment 4 is expected to be published in 2026 following the Draft for Public Consultation that closed in late 2024. This update will be the most significant since the 18th Edition launched in 2018, addressing new technologies and standards.

What’s New in Amendment 4?

Expected changes include:

• Functional earthing and bonding for ICT systems
• Stationary battery installations and energy storage
• Power over Ethernet (PoE) and ELV DC distribution
• Updates for low voltage generating sets
• Clarifications for medical locations and firefighter’s switches
• Enhanced inspection and testing procedures

What About the 19th Edition?

There is no confirmed release date for the 19th Edition. Based on historical patterns, a new edition typically appears every 8–10 years, so it’s likely several years away, possibly around 2028 or later. The next major update is Amendment 4 in 2026, and industry guidance is to stay current with amendments rather than wait for a new edition.

Do You Need to Update Your Knowledge?

If you hold an 18th Edition qualification, retaking the course isn’t mandatory, but:

• Staying current ensures compliance and credibility
• Employers and clients expect up-to-date knowledge
• CPD is essential for competence

If you don’t yet hold your 18th Edition Qualification, do not wait for 2026. To work in the electrical industry, you need to demonstrate an understanding of the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). It is therefore crucial that you take an 18th Edition course as soon as you can remain compliant and work safely within industry.

NAPIT will play a key role in raising awareness of the opportunity, referring interested members, and supporting initial engagement by sharing programme information and connecting employers with the City & Guilds Training team. You’ll also need a supervisor or mentor at work, and you must have lived in the UK for at least three years before starting. If you’re not employed yet, our team can help you find an employer.

Electrical apprenticeship funding explained

One of the biggest perks of an apprenticeship is the funding. If you’re between 16 and 22 years old, your training is fully funded. If you’re older, most of the costs are still covered, and employers usually pay the rest, which is about 5%. You won’t have to pay for your training. Plus, you’ll earn at least minimum wage, and many apprentices get even more under JIB rates. With this support, cost shouldn’t stand in your way. Apprenticeships are an affordable and accessible way to start or change your career.

• Work as part of an electrical team under supervision
• Perform basic tasks like replacing accessories or connecting appliances (e.g., boilers, cookers) to existing connection points
• Use the workshop as a gateway into further training or an apprenticeship

Important Note: This course does not qualify participants to make additions or alterations to fixed electrical installations. It is designed as an introductory step into the electrical industry.

Become an Electrician

It is important to note that neither The 2-Day Basic Electrical Maintenance Course or the 5-Day Electrical Skills Workshop make you a qualified electrician nor do they allow you to complete minor works certificates or carry out additions or alterations to existing electrical installations without appropriate electrical supervision. Instead, these courses are for those interested in developing basic electrical skills and are ideal for associated trades.

If you are interested in becoming a qualified electrician these courses are not suitable aside from providing a foundation knowledge. Instead, to become a qualified electrician, there are industry-recognised routes you should follow which we have highlighted in our ‘Become An Electrician’ guide such as the Diploma and NVQ route or apprenticeships.
