This is a material that has a low resistance and allows electricity to flow easily in it.

• Conduit

A plastic or metal tube used to enclose, protect, and route cables. Normal sizes are 20mm and 25mm.

• Consumer Unit (CU)

Also known as a fuse box, a CU is the point from which electricity is distributed around the home. It contains a variety of circuit breakers or fuses, a main switch and may also have one or more Residual Current Devices (RCDs).

The flow of electrons through a circuit.

• Distribution Board

Also called a fuse box or consumer unit, a distribution board distributes electrical power to various circuits in a building.

• Double Insulated

Appliances marked as double insulated don’t require an earth connection because they have two layers of insulating material, providing an additional safety measure.

DC (direct current) is when electrons are all moving through the conductor in the same direction, e.g. a battery.

• Double Pole Switch

It’s like two separate single-pole switches that are linked together so they work together as 1 switch. For example, the main switch on a Consumer Unit which turns off the Line and Neutral at the same time.

E

• Earth

In electrical terms, “earth” refers to the connection of a conductive part of an electrical appliance or installation to the ground.

• Earthing

The process of connecting a device or installation to the earth to prevent the build-up of electrical potential.

• Earth bonding

The process for connecting exposed metal parts such as water pipes within a property to ‘electrical earth’, usually a gas and or water pipe.

• Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)

This is a safety certificate issued by electricians when they have completed any new electrical work, or major changes to existing electrics. It confirms that the work has been designed, built, inspected, and tested to the UK national standard BS 7671.

• Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
• Formerly known as a periodic inspection report (PIR), this is a report on the condition of your electrical wiring, which contains an overall assessment of the safety of the wiring, observations on its condition and a number of recommendations for action, if required, to restore the wiring to a satisfactory condition for continued safe use.

• Fuse

A device designed to interrupt the flow of electric current in case of overload or a fault. It contains a metal wire that melts when excessive current flows through it.

• Fused connection unit

Often referred to in the electrical trade as fused spurs. These enable electricity to be supplied to an appliance or item of equipment providing its own method of circuit protection (by fuse) and sometimes includes a switch.

• Flex

• Main bonding

Conductors that connect metal pipes (gas, oil, water) entering a home or building to the main earthing terminal of the electrical installation via low-resistance conductors. The connections are made to prevent a dangerous voltage between two accessible metal parts in case there is a fault.

• Mini trunking

A plastic enclosure with one removable side to allow cables to be installed on the surface of walls and ceilings. Used to protect cables from damage and to conceal unsightly cables from view.

We have never been prouder of our staff and the work they have put in over the last 8 months to ensure that we continue to lead the market in more ways than just student numbers. Despite the various challenges we have achieved a hell of a lot over the past year including:

• Brand new 4 Steps Programme – You can now step on and step off your journey to becoming and electrician. Our new flexible programme has been a real hit especially during these turbulent times.

• Brand new eLearning Modules launched – Customer can now study some key subjects via eLearning. This can be done at home or anywhere you fancy and at a time you want.

• Virtual Classroom launched and live within 2 weeks of Lockdown – We have successfully moved much of our theory learning online. Virtual classroom has been used throughout lockdown but is a great tool that we will continue to utilise moving forwards.

• Almost every student booked at the start of lockdown was moved to a new course date – We had to rebuild our schedule from scratch and then start booking existing customers onto new dates. This is one of the biggest challenges we have faced but we now have the processes and systems in place should we ever need to tackle this task again.

We’ve put together some horrifying and dangerous electrical FAILS that could be lurking in your home, which we’re sure will give you goose bumps! So, if you’re scared of the dark and of things that go bump in the night, read on if you dare!!

SCARY! This burnt out unit was likely to have been caused by a loose connection – a real fire hazard!

Beware what lies beneath! What a strange method of connection and probably not done by an electrician. An unsuspecting worker could get a very nasty electric shock!

SPOOKY! It looks like an alien but it’s definitely electrical.

Oh dear – you just don’t use the CPC as a live conductor. Make sure you leave it to the professionals.

Can you imagine the horror when this electrician ventured into the loft to find this critter’s nest! Not sure I’d want to find out what built it!

What would you do if you came across this on a job? It’s enough to scare the living daylights out of most of us and I bet it gave the electrician quite a fright!

Mmm delicious PVC insulation! We all know that rodents just love it – I think they might of regretted trying to snack on these cables though!

Maybe the rats from the image above would have been better moving into this nest – what a mess!

SHOCKING! You’d have to be really desperate if you needed to use this toilet! Touch any of these cables and life could really go down the pan!

I bet whoever did this had fun getting the lid on – there really shouldn’t be this many cables in one small junction box – it might be colourful but not sure how safe it is.

This burnt out adaptor is another fire hazard and was probably caused by a loose connection or overloading.

Unfortunately there are people out there attempting electrical work who don’t know what they are doing with disastrous consequences, which is really bad news for the industry. But we would like to say a big thank you to all those that do a fantastic job of putting these horrors right and keeping our homes and businesses safe.

It’s shocking to think that people work and live in these environments, and shows the need for regular period inspection and testing.

Now that we’ve scared the living daylights out of you, if you want to ensure your electrics are safe then always get a qualified electrician to do any electrical work for you. It’s worth getting an electrician to carry out a period inspection and provide an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) to highlight any issues that may need to be resolved.

Professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University James Hone, said: “We’ve created what is essentially the world’s thinnest light bulb. This new type of ‘broadband’ light emitter can be integrated into chips and will pave the way towards the realisation of atomically thin, flexible and transparent displays, and graphene-based on-chip optical communications.”

The scientists managed to turn the material into a light bulb by passing a current through it. The tiny filament heated up to around 2500 degrees centigrade. It lit up and was visible to the naked despite being created at the atomic level.

The idea of using carbon for a light bulb filament made from Carbon based material is nothing new. In fact Thomas Edison originally used carbon as a filament for his first light bulbs, however his filaments were more than 1 atom thick. It is believed that a new generation of Graphene based light bulbs could reduce energy bills by around 10% and help us reduce our UK energy consumption. Many electricians have recently seen a huge shift in demand from traditional and energy saving lightbulbs to LED lighting which is already driving down UK energy consumption. It seems that a new rival to these products could be on the market pretty soon too.

Essentially the range of Graphene applications seems almost limitless especially in electrical and computing fields. It is quoted as being the most conductive material known to man and it is now being developed by scientists in South Korea to make a new generation of super batteries. They have done this by creating Graphene pom pom’s which have a greater surface area allowing it to be used to conduct electricity.

We think we will be seeing much more about this so called super material in coming years and months. Watch this space for more.

Not only is this bad in terms of taking money away from the industry that invests heavily in producing technical literature it can also have some very serious consequences in terms of safety.

How can this be I hear you ask?

Well when the counterfeiters copy a book these days they don’t simply photo copy it. They actually use software to scan the book and reproduce it. However the software makes mistakes and sometimes letters and numbers are mis-interpreted or completely missing. Needless to say if you can’t rely on your book to give you the correct figures then you run the risk of getting something very wrong.

How to Spot A Counterfeit Book?

It is actually very very hard. These days the counterfeit books are look and feel almost exactly like the real thing. With the code of practice books we found that the counterfeit actually had brighter lighter colours but you wouldn’t know this unless you put two books together.

Can you spot the fake below?

The only other way to tell if your book is not real is to spot a typo or two. If you see a word misspelled or a number or letter missing then you may realise that you have bought a dodgy copy. Looking at the image above the only real way to spot the fake is if you notice the the table numbers are different. The table number should be 15.3 but in the top version the number is 13.3. Also on the far right figure 15.1 text reads ‘CDamaged’ below where it should simply read ‘Damaged’. This is indicative of the type of errors you will find in a counterfeit book. The only other way to tell if your book is not real is to spot a typo or two.

How to avoid buying a counterfeit book

It is simply a case of making sure that you have bought the book from a reputable establishment. If you are buying a book from ebay or somewhere similar then you really are taking a risk. We would advise buying books directly from the IET or Amazon. Two of the counterfeit books that were found in our centre were bought from Amazon Marketplace which essentially is a network of sellers selling new and second hand items. We recommend avoiding Amazon Marketplace for purchasing these books as it is really essential that you get an original copy.

We spoke with our friends at the IET about the books and they had said that this is a growing problem, however this is the first time they had come across counterfeit versions of this PAT testing book. As such we have arranged for these counterfeit books to be sent to the IET so they can hold copies for reference. We have been told by the IET that the problem was getting worse and that recently they found that 20% of the books on a course in a local college held by students turned out to be counterfeit.

If you find you have a counterfeit copy of a book we would advise contacting the seller directly and requesting a refund.
