Working for yourself can be a liberating and empowering experience, but it’s not without its unique challenges either. Learning a valuable skill, such as working as an electrician, is the first step on a self-employment journey that could give you everything you dreamed of. So, if you’re wondering how to get started as an electrician going it on your own, this is a great place to begin.

Firstly, if you’re thinking about becoming a self-employed electrician, once you have completed your training, we would always recommend working with an experienced electrician. This will allow you to gain confidence and experience before going it alone. You can do this by working as an electrician’s mate, working for an electrical contracting firm, or you may have completed an apprenticeship.

Once you feel confident that you have gained enough experience and are competent to go it alone, you may now be ready to take the next step.

Things to consider before going self-employed

Going self-employed effectively means that you are setting up a business. However, before you go much further there are certain things you will want to consider, which include:

How will I acquire new customers?

How would I cope during quiet periods of no or little income?

Do I have enough money to get set up? ie. buying new tools and a van/car

Can I get by without having the benefits of paid holiday, sick pay and pensions contributions?

Am I OK working on my own?

Can I manage my cashflow, record keeping and completing tax returns?

What insurances do I need?

Do I need to join a competent person scheme?

What are the advantages of being self-employed?

There are plenty of advantages to being self-employed and these include:

Being your own boss – you get to have a more varied workload as you get to choose the type of work you take on.

Being able to work with more flexibility – you will have more control over the hours you work, which will allow you to arrange your day around any other commitments you may have.

Being able to achieve a much higher income – if you put in the hard work you will be able to earn more. This is mainly because you can charge hourly or day rates, which can be higher than some standard salaries. Day rates can vary depending on your experience and region but range from approx. £140 – £350 per day.

Offset your tax liability – there are certain costs that you are able to deduct from income when calculating your tax liability, eg. your equipment/tools, mileage, stationery, etc. To find out more click here.

What are the disadvantages of being self-employed?

Of course there will always be some disadvantages to going self-employed and these include:

Start up costs – you will need to have in place some money to get you started as you will most likely need to buy new tools, a van/car, insurances etc.

Finding customers – this can be challenging to start, and you will need to find ways to advertise your services to get noticed!

Income – your income will no longer be consistent. You will need to ensure you can keep up with any bills, loans, mortgages, rents etc. You will also need to bear in mind that during times when you are off work, due to sickness or holiday, you won’t be getting paid.

Admin – when you work for yourself you will be responsible for the admin side of your business, ie, scheduling in work, quoting, invoicing, insurance, etc. You will have to ensure that you are complying with regulations.

Sole Trader or Limited Company?

Once you have decided to go self-employed your next choice is whether to start up as sole trader or a limited company.

Sole Trader: An advantage to becoming a sole trader is that it is relatively easy to set up. There are also certain expenses you can subtract from your income when calculating your taxable profit, you can check the government website for more detail, but these include business related travel, business insurances, stock, etc.

Disadvantages are that it could be hard to raise finance as lenders tend to prefer to lend to limited companies. The tax rates aren’t always great especially when you reach a certain level of earning. Another thing to consider is that as a sole trader you are the sole owner of the business and as such have unlimited liability. This means that if your business finds itself in debt then you are personally liable and if things go wrong you could end up losing personal assets.

As a sole trader there are certain things you will need to do:

Firstly set up as a sole trader, you can do this via the GOV.UK website

Inform HMRC that you are now self-employed as you will now need to pay tax through self-assessment and pay Class 2 and 4 National Insurance contributions. For more info visit the Government’s website.

Arrange your insurances – these could include professional indemnity insurance and public liability insurance. If you employ anyone you will also need to consider employers liability insurance.

Check whether you need to set up a business bank account. You may be able to use your personal account, however having a separate account will help to keep your business and personal finances separate.

Put in place a process for recording your profits and evidence of your business expenses – this will help when completing your tax return.

If you intend to work from home make sure you check your mortgage or tenancy agreement to ensure you’re not contravening any terms and conditions.

Consider taking out a private pension to ensure you have money put aside for retirement. The government will still contribute into your pension in the form of tax relief.

Limited Company: To set up a limited company you must register with Companies House. This is known as ‘incorporation’. A limited company has its own legal identity and as such is separate from its owners and directors. A limited company has the benefit of having limited liability, meaning that if something did go wrong your personal assets aren’t exposed.

Limited companies are also more tax efficient as you pay corporation tax on any profits rather than you paying income tax. You can also claim tax relief on business expenses. There are more allowances and tax deductible costs that can be claimed against as a limited company.

The disadvantages of a limited company are that there is a lot more paperwork and legal fees to consider. These include filing a yearly annual return and annual accounts, which you can either do yourself, or hire an accountant to do them for you.

As a limited company there are certain things you will need to do if you’re changing from sole trader:

Decide if you are going to be the only director or whether you want others involved

Decide on a name for your company

Register your business with Companies House – you will need to create your memorandum and articles of association

Inform HMRC that your legal structure has changed – this is important as this affects the amount of tax you need to pay

Set up a new business bank account specifically for your limited company

Let your insurer know that your legal structure has changed

We would recommend that before you make any decision regarding which route to take, you first speak to a financial adviser or accountant to get some sound tax advice.

How Can I Stand Out As A Self-Employed Electrician?

Think of your current skillset: beyond what you have learned about being an electrician, what are some other skills you have learned that could contribute? Do you also know the basics of installing gas, for example, or perhaps you’ve had some experience in marketing or even enjoy creating adverts for your business?

Upskill yourself even more: you will always have an edge over other electricians if there is something that you know that others don’t. For example, with renewable energy on the rise, the inevitable future is more and more solar-powered. If you are able to take some time and learn about the intricacies of solar installation, new solar technology and how to be more eco-conscious, this can go a long way in customers choosing your services.

Be consistent: people are always going to remember exceptional service, whether good or bad. By sticking to your word, showing up, delivering on your promises, and providing a personalised service you will be recommended by customers and build up a loyal base in no time.

A stripped screw can be a frustrating obstacle, turning a simple task into a challenging ordeal. Whether you’re a seasoned handyman or an enthusiastic DIYer, encountering a stripped screw is an inevitable part of working with various materials. In this guide, the team from TradeSkills4U, the leading electrical training course provider in the UK, will look at the causes of stripped screws, explore methods to avoid them in your projects, and equip you with a comprehensive toolkit to effectively remove these stubborn fasteners from metal, wood, and plastic.

What is a Stripped Screw?

A stripped screw occurs when the notches in the screw head become mangled or worn, preventing a secure grip for the screwdriver. This issue can affect screws of any quality and often happens with older, rusted, or frequently turned screws. Common causes include the use of incorrect screwdriver sizes, over-tightening, rusty or damaged screws, worn-out drill bits, incorrect alignment, poor-quality screws, and long screws prone to binding.

Stripped screws are also referred to as “threaded screws” or “rounded screws”.

Defining the Problem and Identifying Common Causes

Recognizing the common causes of stripped screws is essential for preventing this annoyance in your DIY projects. Key factors to watch out for include using the wrong screwdriver size or type, over-tightening, rusty or damaged screws, worn-out drill bits, incorrect alignment or incomplete seating of screws, poor-quality screws, and long screws that are prone to binding.

Recognizing and Avoiding Threaded Screws in DIY Projects

Understanding the common causes of stripped screws can help you avoid them in your DIY projects. Watch out for the following things so you can recognize the potential for a stripped screw. This can keep you from having to deal with this annoying problem.

Incorrect screwdriver size or type

Over-tightened screws

Rusty or damaged screws

Worn-out drill bits

Screws that have been incorrectly aligned or not fully seated

Poor quality screws

Long screws that are prone to binding

You can find stripped screws in any material, including wood, metal, and plastic. Sometimes, screws strip while you install them. Other times you find them that way when doing repairs. You can avoid leaving problems like that for other people to deal with by making sure you properly seat screws. You also want to use the right length of screw and ensure your screwdriver matches the head properly.

Removing Rounded Screws from Metal, Wood, and Plastic: Why the Material Matters

Most of the methods described below will work if a stripped screw is embedded in metal, wood, or plastic. Removing a stripped screw from each material, however, presents its own challenges.

Stripped screws in metal need to be removed carefully, otherwise you risk scratches or damage. Be extra diligent when using power tools and cutting materials.

A stripped screw in wood will likely be flush with the material or slightly lower than the surface, so using a stripped screw extractor may be your best bet to retrieve the screw.

Plastic is a fairly soft material, and a light touch is a must if you want to reuse a hole in plastic after removing a screw. Hammering, grinding, and cutting to remove the screw may render the hole unusable.

No matter which material you’re working with, you’ll need a bit of muscle to remove stripped screws. You must use firm pressure and patience, moving the screw a fraction of a turn at a time, otherwise you risk breaking the screw and making the removal process all the more challenging.

How to Unscrew a Stripped Screw

Stripped screw remover tools make it easy to remove a messed-up screw. Still, most DIYers may not have a set handy. Fortunately, several other common tools and supplies exist that almost everyone has on hand. You can use these in a pinch. These tips and tricks will help you unscrew a stripped screw in just a few minutes.

Preparation and Required Tools

Gather these common tools and supplies to help you quickly and easily remove a stripped screw:

Flathead screwdriver

Locking pliers

Rubber band

Duct tape

Steel wool

Hammer

Metal punches

Drill and drill bits

Penetrant spray or thread-cutting oil

Screw extractor tool set

Wrench

Safety glasses

Work gloves

How To Remove Threaded Screws in 16 Different Ways

Use A Hammer & Manual Screwdriver

One of the first things you should try when wondering how to remove a stripped screw is using a hammer. Sometimes all your stripped screw needs is a little tap. Screws that get stripped are usually made from soft metals, which means you can deform them quite easily too. Try tapping a manual screwdriver into the head of the stripped screw with a hammer. This should lodge it in, giving you a little bit more torque on the screw so you can twist it out.

Use Pliers or Grips

Vice grips or pliers are great tools for removing stripped screws when they are partly exposed. Grip the screw head with your pliers or grips and rotate the screw out of the material. Be careful not to damage the material around the screw when you use this method.

Rubber Bands Can Give You Extra Grip

As strange as it may sound, rubber bands can be very helpful for removing stripped screws. They can help you get a bit more grip on the head of the screw. Here’s how you do it: First, cover the head of the stripped screw with the band and insert the screwdriver. Then, apply pressure and slowly turn the screw. With any luck, it will come loose. Be careful not to turn the screw too fast, as this will damage the rubber band. If you don’t have any rubber bands, you can use other friction increasing materials, including steel wool and abrasive powder.

Our tutor Andy demonstrates how to remove a stripped screw using the ever popular “elastic band”method – watch the full video below (don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube Channel here):

Use An Impact Driver & Hammer

A manual impact driver is a great tool for removing stubborn, stripped screws. You simply insert the bit into the stripped screw and strike it with a hammer. A manual impact driver is designed to push into the screw head and rotate it in your chosen direction at the same time when you strike it with a hammer. This should loosen your stripped screw and help you remove it.

Try a Screw Extractor

An obvious choice for removing stripped screws is a screw extractor. A screw extractor tool is designed specifically to help remove damaged screws.

You’ll need to choose the right-sized screw extractor to fit your screw. Screw extractors have two sides. Side 1 is used to make a smooth hole in the screw head with no burrs. Side 2 is used to grip onto the hole you have made with side one and drill it out. Check both sides of the screw extractor fit in your damaged screw head. Then, make sure to set your drill in reverse. Insert side 1 of the extractor bit into your damaged screw and use your drill to create a smooth hole. Then, insert side 2 of the extractor into the hole you have made in the screw head and use your drill to rotate the screw out.

Drill Into the Stripped Screw

If you drill a small hole into the stripped screw head, it can sometimes give your screwdriver just enough depth and leverage to rotate the screw. Make sure to use a drill bit designed for metal and be careful not to drill too far into the screw, or the head could come off.

Use a Left-Handed Drill Bit

Left-handed drill bits are designed in the opposite direction to regular drill bits and can be useful for removing stripped screws. Insert your left-handed bit into your drill, set it in reverse mode, and drill into the head of the stripped screw. With any luck, the left-handed bit will catch and pull your stripped screw out.

Use A Rotary Tool to Cut a Slit into The Rounded Screws

A rotary tool is a power tool that can be very handy for removing stripped screws. To remove a stripped screw using this method, cut a slit into the stripped screw head that will fit a flat head screwdriver, and then twist it out. First, attach a cutting disk to the rotary tool and use it to slice a slit in the head of the stripped screw. Make sure the slit is as close to the size of the flathead screwdriver as possible. This is to ensure it fits properly, so it gets a good grip and doesn’t come out. You can also use a hacksaw to carefully cut a slit into the stripped screw.

Apply Anti Cam-Out Fluid

Anti cam-out fluid is a liquid you can apply to the head of a stripped screw that increases the friction between the screwdriver and the screw head. The extra friction the anti cam-out fluid gives will make removing the screw easier. This one is best used on screws that aren’t too stripped. Or even better, to be used as a prevention method for stripping screws in the first place.

Use A Larger Size Screwdriver

This one may work if the screw isn’t too badly stripped. A larger screwdriver may fit into the stripped screw head, and you’ll be able to rotate it out with a little bit of fiddling. This one is worth a quick try, as it could save you money on equipment.

Use A Flathead Screwdriver

If it’s a Philips head screw that is stuck, try inserting a flat head screwdriver. This technique is best used in combination with a friction-enhancing material like a rubber band.

Glue A Nut to The Head of The Screw

If you have any nuts lying around, you can try gluing one around the head of the stripped screw. Once it sticks, you’ll be able to loosen it with a socket wrench or a spanner.

Weld A Nut to The Screw Head

If gluing didn’t work, and you have the tools and know-how, you can try spot welding a nut to the head of the screw. Once it’s welded, you should be able to remove the screw with a socket wrench or a spanner.

Connect The Stripped Screw to A Drill

If the stripped screw head is exposed, you could try to connect it to an electric drill. Place the chuck over the head of the screw, tighten the jaws, put the drill in reverse, and gently rotate it out of the material.

Try To Loosen the Screw from The Material

If a screw is stripped, it can be very hard to get it to rotate. You can make your chances of removing it better by applying WD-40 or another type of penetrating oil. Apply the WD-40 and wait for it to set. Then, firmly insert your screwdriver and twist. The WD-40 may just help you get enough leverage to loosen the screw. You can also try heating the area. To do this, heat the area of the screw with a heat gun or blow torch and allow it to cool before you try to loosen the screw again. This works well if the screw has been fastened with a bonding agent like Loctite.

Prevent The Screw from Stripping in The First Place

If you don’t want to spend your time removing stripped screws, here are a few tips to help you prevent them from becoming stripped in the first place. Always try to use the correct screw for the application, and make sure you use the correct screwdriver for the type and size of screw that you are using. Try to use a manual screwdriver over an electric drill as you will get more of a feel for when it is about to come out. When using an electric screwdriver, avoid applying too much pressure on the screw. Put a pilot hole in your material before you insert the screw to decrease resistance when you’re inserting it.

It’s a natural fit for an electrician’s business, especially smaller businesses, where social media can be a highly effective marketing tool when used strategically. In this article, the UK’s best electrician training team at Trade Skills 4 U will look at how electricians can use social media effectively to grow their business, covering various key aspects and insights, including social media post ideas for electricians.

Social media marketing statistics every electrician should know

In 2023, around 4.9 billion people are using social media – and this is expected to hit 5.85 billion by 2027! Here are some key statistics that show why it’s a great option for marketing your electrician business, whether you’re a sole trader or looking to grow.

Facebook is still the most popular platform at 2.9 million monthly active users – but YouTube is growing very fast with 2.5 million monthly active users.

Globally, the average person spends 145 minutes per day on social media. In the UK, the average is 1.56 hours a month.

90% of people on social media follow at least one brand and 90% of people buy from brands they follow on social media

In 2022, the UK had 15.1 million people buying off social media

93.79% of businesses use social media to connect with their customers, including 77% of small businesses

Choose the Right Channels

The first step in using social media effectively as an electrician is to select the right platforms that align with your business goals and target audience. Here are some platform options and their strengths:

Instagram & TikTok: These platforms are ideal for those who enjoy creating visually appealing content. With features like Reels, Stories, and various visual filters, you can showcase your work and engage with a broad audience.

YouTube: Owned by Google, YouTube is the second most powerful social media channel AND the second-biggest search engine in the world. 92% of people watch YouTube videos to get information or to learn something, making it a great option for electrician marketing.

Facebook: Facebook is a great platform for sharing updates, customer reviews, and recommendations. It’s becoming a social search engine where people seek recommendations from friends and followers. Encourage your Facebook followers to be brand advocates.

Twitter: If you prefer conversations and using hashtags, Twitter can be a valuable auxiliary platform. It’s less image-heavy but can serve as a space for discussions and quick updates.

LinkedIn: For electricians working with the public sector or aiming to secure bigger commercial contracts, LinkedIn is essential. It allows you to connect with professionals, businesses, and potential commercial clients.

Selecting the right channels will help you focus your efforts and resources where they are most likely to yield results.

Use video marketing

Video marketing is a fantastic option for marketing your electrician business online – because customers love them. Videos visually convey electrical services, simplifying complex concepts for potential customers, they foster a personal connection, building trust and loyalty, and this content boosts SEO, enhancing your business’s online visibility.

They are also very versatile, as you can post videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms. Some great examples of video marketing content include videos that educate your audience about electrical safety, common issues, and DIY solutions, where you can offer valuable tips and insights to establish yourself as an expert in your field. You can also showcase before-and-after videos of your projects, have clients video their experience of working with you, introduce yourself and your team members, and answer frequently asked questions.

Optimise Your Social Media Content

Once you’ve chosen your social media platforms, it’s essential to tailor your content to each one. Different platforms have different formats and requirements:

Twitter has character limits, so it’s best for sharing links and retweeting testimonials.

LinkedIn is suitable for long-form content and industry news.

Facebook and Instagram are more photo-rich, and you can use relevant hashtags to enhance visibility.

YouTube is ideal for video marketing, including how-to videos, solving issues, safety tips, product demos, and more.

Ensure your content is adapted to the platform’s strengths and limitations to maximise engagement.

Interact with Customers

One of the primary advantages of using social media is the ability to interact with both potential and existing customers. Building rapport and trust with your audience is vital. Respond to questions and engage with your followers promptly.

Remember that potential customers often seek recommendations from friends and followers on social media, so a strong online presence and positive reviews can greatly enhance your credibility. In fact, 88% of people trust online reviews from other consumers as much as they trust recommendations from friends and family!

It’s crucial to maintain a professional and positive online presence as everything you post can be shared and retweeted, potentially reaching a wider audience.

Set Up Your Google My Business Account

Having a Google My Business listing is really helpful for electricians because it makes it easier for people to find your services – especially in terms of bringing in local business. You can start by putting your business on Google Maps. If you include your main keyword in your business name, it will improve your rankings in search engine results. Having a verified Google listing also gives you more control over what people see when they click on your listing, which makes your business more legitimate and trustworthy.

To make the most of your Google business listing, it’s important to provide all the information Google asks for, like your phone number, address, website, and more. You should also pick the right categories for your business, like “Electrician.” Plus, you can use the messaging and booking feature to let people contact you directly through Google. Don’t forget to answer common questions in the questions and answers section and to respond to all reviews. This way, your electrician services will show up more often and get noticed by potential customers.

Humanise Your Accounts

Whether you’re a solo electrician or run a business, it’s important to avoid appearing as a faceless entity. People relate better to real individuals, real stories, and human interest. Take advantage of the transparency that social media offers to show your personality and authenticity, to show off who you are and what you do.

Be candid, engage with your customers as if they were friends, and share personal experiences. For instance, if you’re acquiring new skills, share your learning journey.

Focus on Providing Helpful Content

Rather than a hard sell, concentrate on delivering valuable content that genuinely assists people. Answer common queries, address prevalent issues, and educate your audience on electrical safety and hazards.

By providing solutions and building authority in your field, you can cultivate customer loyalty and trust.

Post Regularly

Consistency is key in social media. If you want to build a following and expand your audience, you must post regularly. Aim to post at least once a day, if possible, as this keeps your content visible and engages your audience. You can repurpose content for different platforms to maintain a steady flow of posts.

Consider using social media management tools like Hootsuite to schedule posts in advance. It enables you to maintain a regular posting schedule, even when you’re busy with other aspects of your business.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags are no longer exclusive to Twitter. Research and incorporate relevant hashtags in your social media posts. This expands your content’s reach beyond your immediate followers. You can analyse the hashtags your competitors and other electrical firms use or use online tools like Display Purposes to find suitable hashtags related to your content.

Use the right social media marketing tools

Social media tools can significantly simplify marketing for electricians, making it a lot easier to produce and post content that looks great while saving you time.

Platforms like Hootsuite, Buffer, and Sprout Social streamline content scheduling, allowing electricians to maintain a consistent online presence effortlessly. These tools also offer analytics, helping professionals track their campaigns’ effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly.

Canva simplifies graphic design, aiding in the creation of eye-catching visuals for posts and ads. Moreover, customer relationship management (CRM) software like HubSpot can manage client interactions, ensuring a personalised and efficient experience. With these tools, electricians can maximise their online reach, engage with their audience, and ultimately grow their businesses more effectively.

As you can see, social media can be a powerful tool for electricians to attract new leads, engage with their audience, and enhance their brand’s visibility. By choosing the right channels, optimising content, interacting with customers, humanising your accounts, offering helpful content, posting regularly, and using hashtags, you can leverage the full potential of social media to grow your electrician business. Embrace these strategies, and watch your business electrify the social media landscape!

The Best Ways to Protect Yourself Against Tool Theft

Wherever you are in the world, tool theft is a costly issue for electricians – and that includes electricians in the UK! Tool theft may sound minor, but it leads to significant financial losses, stress, and disruptions to work. Here, the UK’s best electrician training team at Trade Skills 4 U looks at the increasing problem of tool theft and give you a guide to the best ways to safeguard tools, reduce losses, prevent theft, and maintain your business.

Tool Theft is on the Rise in the UK – And Globally

Tool theft remains a concerning issue for electricians, not only in the United Kingdom but also in many other parts of the world. News reports frequently highlight this problem, underscoring the importance of addressing it effectively.

Those who have experienced tool theft know that it is not just about the financial impact, but also the emotional stress that accompanies it. Losing tools can cost victims hundreds or even thousands of pounds in terms of both the tools themselves and related expenses. These expenses may include replacing tools, stock, and even repairing damaged vans. In the USA in April, an electrician’s toolbox was stolen from outside a Good Samaritan hospital, costing him over £1,200! In the UK, it’s estimated that 51% of electricians have had tools stolen from their vans. Interestingly, it’s as winter draw in that tool theft rises:

Tool theft incidents reach their peak in November, as the clocks change.

November experiences a 34 percent increase in tool theft compared to April, the month immediately following the change to British Summer Time

Tool theft from vehicles sees a 20 percent surge during the darker winter months

Not only is tool theft a big problem, but it’s also much more likely to happen to people’s vehicles than at construction sites. The Metropolitan Police shared some alarming numbers – tool theft from vehicles has gone up by 25% in the past year and now accounts for one-third of all tool thefts in 2021 and 2022.

If we focus on London, things look even worse. From January 2021 to October 2022, a shocking 34,712 tools were stolen. To put it in perspective, this is 62% more than the 21,445 tools stolen from January 2019 to December 2020. These numbers make it clear that something needs to be done to tackle this growing issue.

Furthermore, electricians should be aware that thieves are not always content with a single theft. It’s common for them to return to the scene of the crime months later, anticipating that the tools have been replaced with new ones.

Why it’s Important to Get Tool Insurance

While insurance provides some financial relief, it does not eliminate the inconvenience and downtime associated with tool theft. It’s not just the cost of replacing tools; it’s also the potential loss of revenue due to delays in completing work. Electricians need a comprehensive strategy to tackle tool theft, combining both preventive measures and tools for recovery.

The Best Ways to Secure Your Tools

While the ideal approach is to remove tools from your van overnight, practicality can be a significant concern. If you lack a secure storage option, leaving your tools in the van becomes a necessity. So, how can you protect your tools from theft?

Photograph Your Tools

One of the initial steps is to photograph your tools. This simple but effective measure can prove invaluable if your tools are ever recovered by the police. Having clear images of your tools, including serial numbers, can aid law enforcement in identifying and returning stolen property.

Personalise Your Tools

Thieves are less likely to steal personalised tools. Consider etching your name on them or using bright-coloured paint to make them easily identifiable. Not only does this deter theft, but it can also facilitate the recovery process if your tools are stolen and subsequently found.

Record Serial Numbers

Keep a comprehensive record of your tools, including their serial numbers and other essential data. This information can be essential for law enforcement when identifying stolen tools.

Use Stickers and Signs

Advertising that your tools are marked can be a powerful deterrent to potential thieves. Stickers and signs on your van or tools can signal that the items are traceable, making them less attractive targets.

Advanced Protection for Electrician Tools

In addition to basic marking, several advanced methods and tools can help protect your equipment:

SelectaDNA Tools and Equipment Kit

This kit contains a unique DNA code. Each item you mark with SelectaDNA contains microdots with this code. In the unfortunate event of theft, these codes allow the police to identify stolen property and link criminals to the crime. The SelectaDNA Tools and Equipment Kit includes a bottle of microdots, laminated warning labels, DNA marking stickers, UV keyring light, and lifetime registration on the Secure Asset Register. It retails for approximately £50.

Alpha Dot Pack

Alpha Dots offer an anti-theft system using tiny microdots, each approximately 1mm in diameter, printed with a unique PIN (Personal Identification Number) registered to you. These dots come in a glue-filled applicator and can be easily applied to your tools. Once in place, the glue is nearly impossible to remove. Your marked items are registered for free on the TRACELINE national database, simplifying the identification of the owner of any recovered stolen property. This pack usually retails for around £30.

Smart Water

Smart Water provides a kit for tradespeople containing forensic fluid, tamper-proof stickers, and van stickers. The forensic fluid glows green under UV light, making it a great way to identify your tools. The kit, priced at £73, offers effective protection for your valuable equipment.

Protect Your Electrical Tools with Van Security

Ensuring the security of your van is essential. Relying solely on factory-fitted van locks may not provide adequate protection for your livelihood. Enhancing your van’s security can substantially reduce the risk of theft.

Locking Systems

Van SlamLock

Van SlamLocks automatically lock the van door when it is shut, requiring no key for locking. This feature provides maximum security against opportunistic theft from an unlocked van, eliminating the possibility of theft due to driver error. Additionally, the van Slamlock can be used alongside van deadlocks on the same key and includes anti-pick features for added security.

Arma Plate

Arma Plates are highly effective for repairing damage caused by thieves and preventing future theft. This system comprises two plates: a stainless steel plate that protects the vulnerable area around the lock or handle, and an internal plate with locking nuts. It is suitable for most vans.

SlamPlate

If your van has been vandalised, and the handles have either been broken or removed, the SlamPlate van lock is an excellent choice for securing your van from further unauthorised access. The lock is constructed from a steel plate coated in a black powder coat or stainless steel, providing a superior level of van lock security. The SlamPlate van security lock is door-specific and is available for various van models.

Prevention is Better Than a Cure

Most thieves are opportunists looking for easy targets. However, they can be deterred, so the goal should be to make it as difficult as possible for them to steal your tools and equipment.

Practical Theft Prevention Tips for Electricians

The following measures can help electricians prevent tool theft and safeguard their valuable equipment:

Empty Your Van

While your insurance policy may cover your tools when left in your van overnight, it’s still wise to bring all your heavy-duty tools inside every evening if you can. An empty van is a strong deterrent for thieves.

Inventory List

A comprehensive inventory list of all the tools and equipment kept in your van, along with photographs of each item, helps you keep track of your stock and quickly spot theft. This documentation also facilitates the insurance claim process, should theft occur.

UV Pens

Marking all your tools and high-value items with your name or your business’s name using UV ink is an effective way to deter theft. Additionally, if your tools are found by the police or offered for sale, these UV markings can aid in their recovery.

Speak to Staff

Devote an afternoon to discuss best practices in van and tool safety and security with your team. Additionally, ensure that new staff members are informed about these measures to maintain a vigilant and secure work environment.

Park Safely

When you don’t have the option of parking in a secure location, prioritise well-lit areas, especially those equipped with CCTV. Areas that are well-illuminated and have active security measures are more likely to deter thieves.

Protect Your Catalytic Converter

Electricians should be aware that thieves often target catalytic converters in vans, as they are relatively easy to access. Consider investing in an anti-theft device designed to protect your catalytic converter.

Remove Batteries and Charger

Thieves are less likely to target tools that don’t include their batteries and chargers. By engraving your tools with identifying information and removing these components, you decrease the desirability of the tools for thieves.

Innovative Solutions for Tool Theft Prevention

Modern technology and innovative tools can offer additional layers of security and tracking for your tools.

Lockable Power Tools with Apps

Investing in power tools equipped with locking features that can be disabled through a smartphone app provides added security. Locked tools are essentially worthless to thieves. Furthermore, it’s important to communicate this fact by posting warnings on your work truck and trailer, indicating that all your tools are disabled.

Add Interior Deadbolts to Your Work Truck

Factory door lock cylinders are attached to the door sheet metal with a spring clip, which can be easily removed by novice thieves. Interior sliding deadbolts are more challenging to defeat. These can be manually or electrically operated, and the electric versions can connect to your vehicle’s remote keyless entry system, allowing you to lock and unlock the deadbolts with the push of a button on your key fob.

Install a Van Alarm System

According to contractingbusiness.com, “an estimated 90% of work truck break-ins and power tool thefts take place between 6 p.m. on Friday and 6 a.m. on Monday.” Since it’s impossible to keep a constant watch over your work truck, protecting it with an alarm system is crucial. Alarm systems can be obtained for less than $100, but higher-end models, costing around $400, provide enhanced security. These systems often offer two-way communication, confirming that the system is armed, and they can send alerts to your smartphone if the doors are opened. Some systems include sensing modules that detect glass breakage or report if someone tries to jack up the vehicle to remove expensive components or access it from below.

Track Them Down

High-value tools can be tracked via GPS. You can attach a GPS tracker like Tile to your tools or toolbox, allowing you to locate them if they are stolen. Many modern tools also come equipped with GPS tracking devices, which can be incredibly valuable when you need to recover your stolen tools.

Connect Your Apps

Many modern tradespeople are using smartphones to keep track of their tools and equipment. Apps like Toolwatch are available to help generate insurance claims and police reports, streamlining the process and allowing you to get back to work faster.

Preventing tool theft is an essential concern for electricians. By adopting a combination of proactive measures, marking tools, enhancing van security, and investing in modern technology, you can protect your livelihood and minimise losses. Insurance, records, and smartphone apps also play vital roles in recovery efforts. Keep your tools secure, and you’ll ensure business continuity and peace of mind. Remember, it’s far more cost-effective to invest in prevention than dealing with the aftermath of a theft.

Electricians are the unsung heroes behind our well-lit, powered, and technologically advanced lives. They ensure our homes, offices, and public spaces function safely and efficiently. However, the electrical trade is not without its risks. Unforeseen accidents, mishaps, or unfortunate incidents can lead to significant financial losses, legal liabilities, and damage to one’s professional reputation. To mitigate these risks and secure the foundation of your electrical business, having the right insurance for your electrician business is as important as being a qualified electrician. In this guide, UK’s best electrician training team at Trade Skills 4 U will talk about the different aspects of insurance for electricians, so you have the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and secure the necessary coverage.

Why Electricians Need Insurance

Electricians work in a dynamic environment where the unexpected is an ever-present reality. In the absence of insurance, these unforeseen incidents can place an immense personal and financial burden on your shoulders. Insurance isn’t a luxury for electricians; it’s a necessity that provides protection, peace of mind, and a safety net in case of various unforeseen events. Here’s why insurance is a must-have:

Accidental Damage: Electrical work involves navigating through various properties, and accidents leading to property damage can happen. Insurance covers these liabilities.

Protecting Against Injuries: Electrical work carries inherent risks. Injuries to yourself or others are a reality. Insurance helps shoulder the financial burden in case of accidents or injuries.

Tool and Equipment Protection: Electricians rely on expensive tools and equipment. Insurance coverage ensures that the loss or theft of these essential tools doesn’t disrupt your livelihood.

Legal Safeguards: In the litigious world we live in, legal disputes can be crippling. Insurance provides protection and legal representation in such cases.

Employee Well-being: If you employ staff, you’re responsible for their safety and well-being. Insurance, in this context, is not just a legal requirement but an ethical obligation.

Preserving Your Reputation: Professional indemnity insurance safeguards your reputation by protecting you from claims of professional negligence or data breaches.

Essential Types of Insurance for Electricians

While the specific insurance needs of electricians may vary based on their circumstances and business structure, there are several core types of coverage that are generally indispensable. Here are the key insurance types of electricians should consider:

Public Liability Insurance

We often get asked what insurance does a self-employed electrician need? Public liability insurance is the answer! This protects your business if property becomes damaged during the course of your work there or if you have an accident which requires you to take time off work to recover. It also shields you from liability in case of accidental property damage or injury to third parties, including clients or members of the public. Given the potential risks associated with electrical work, this coverage is critical.

There are several levels of public liability insurance available up to £5M so you can be sure that you will be protected financially in the unlikely event of a serious incident occurring. If you are thinking about not bothering with public liability, consider, for example, how you will meet the cost of potential property damage. In fact, the largest public liability claim to date within the NICEIC Insurance Services was £110k due to fire damage at a property where a contractor was working. Think about how you would meet such a cost if this happened to you!

Employers’ Liability Insurance

If you employ any staff, including trainees or subcontractors, Employers liability is compulsory as it is your duty to protect the well-being and safety of those who you employ within your business. It covers the costs associated with injuries or illnesses your employees sustain while working for you. Failure to have this insurance can result in significant fines in excess of £2500 per day. Employers’ liability insurance cover can protect you up to £10M in liability so you can have the peace of mind that you have sufficient cover in place. In fact, the largest employer’s liability claim to date through NICEIC Insurance Services was for £352k. This claim was the result of a sub-contractor falling off a ladder.

Tools and Equipment Insurance

Tools and equipment insurance, also called Tools In Transit Cover, provides protection against the theft, damage, or loss of your essential tools and equipment. It is all too easy to overlook this optional extra in favour of cheaper cover, however of claims made to date through NICEIC Insurance Services 29% have been for theft. 78% of these claims relate to theft of tools, particularly from a van.

Having tools stolen from a van is one of the biggest bug bears among electricians and it can be very costly to replace them if they are stolen, not to mention lost days when you cannot work. As such it is worth considering some optional tools in transit cover to your policy so you are covered should you have to deal with this.

Fee for Intervention (FFI) Cover

It is worth comparing different policies to find out what you are actually covered for. A more expensive policy may actually cover you for items which are optional extras in another quote. If you hold your insurance with NICEIC Insurance Services, you will also be covered for ‘Fee for Intervention’ (FFI). If your insurance doesn’t cover you for this currently you may like to read on.

Since 1st October 2012 HSE have been operating a Fee for Intervention (FFI) cost recovery scheme. This scheme means that under the Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations 2012, those that break health and safety laws are liable for the recovery of HSE’s related costs including inspection, investigation and taking enforcement action.

At a cost of £124 per hour, this could prove to be very costly to electrical contractors who are involved in HSE disputes.

To help avoid this, NICEIC Insurance Services now provide limited cover up to £1000 as standard with their Public Liability Insurance.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional Indemnity Insurance is a critical safeguard for individuals who offer professional advice or handle client data. This insurance serves as a protective shield against claims stemming from professional negligence or data breaches, ensuring that both your reputation and financial well-being remain secure.

In the realm of construction, Professional Indemnity Insurance, often referred to as Design and Construct Professional Indemnity, is a specialised policy tailored to shield contractors and subcontracted specialists from allegations related to errors in their work or incorrect designs.

This policy encompasses legal defence costs for contractors and any potential damages awarded in connection with alleged errors in project design or construction. These errors can include issues such as incorrect designs, projects that do not meet their intended purposes, or the use of improper materials that deviate from the project specifications.

While a conventional Professional Indemnity policy generally excludes claims associated with design, construction, maintenance, or installation errors, a Design and Construct policy is purposefully crafted to encompass these specific claims. In addition to this broader coverage, a Design and Construct Professional Indemnity policy offers Rectification Cover, which includes the costs incurred for remedial work or actions taken to mitigate potential losses that could otherwise lead to a liability claim.

Cyber Insurance

With the rise of digital threats and data breaches, Cyber Insurance can protect your business from the financial consequences of data breaches, hacking incidents, and other cyber-related events. Given the increasing reliance on technology in electrical work as well as the volume of sensitive client, company, and supplier data collected, safeguarding your digital assets is vital.

What is the Difference Between Public Liability and Employers’ Liability Insurance?

Understanding the key differences between Public Liability Insurance and Employers’ Liability Insurance is essential for electricians:

Public Liability Insurance protects you in cases of accidental property damage or injury to third parties, such as clients or members of the public. It serves as a financial safeguard in the event of accidents or property damage during your work. This coverage is highly recommended for all electricians, especially if you work in clients’ homes.

Employers’ Liability Insurance is a legal requirement if you employ staff. It covers the costs associated with injuries or illnesses that your employees sustain while working for your business. Fines for not having Employers’ Liability Insurance in place can be substantial, making it an imperative aspect of your business structure.

Choosing the Right Insurance for Electricians

Selecting the right insurance for your electrical business is not a one-size-fits-all endeavour. It requires careful consideration and a clear understanding of your specific needs and circumstances. Here are some essential factors to keep in mind:

Assessing Risk

Evaluate the level of risk your business faces in the electrical trade. Consider the nature of your projects, the types of clients you work with, and the potential hazards involved in your work.

Financial Well-being

Assess your financial well-being and cash flow. If you have limited cash resources or savings, it’s advisable to opt for more comprehensive coverage to reduce out-of-pocket expenses in case of a claim.

Specialisation and Work Type

Consider the type of electrical work you perform. Different specialisations may entail varying levels of risk, which can affect your insurance needs. For example, a highway system electrician may require different coverage compared to someone specialising in equipment testing and maintenance.

Consult a Professional Insurance Broker

Navigating the complex world of insurance can be challenging. Consult with a professional insurance broker or agent who specialises in electrical insurance. They can provide expert guidance, assess your unique requirements, and help you obtain the coverage you need.

Regularly Review and Update

Insurance is not a set-and-forget arrangement. It’s crucial to regularly review and update your insurance policy to ensure it aligns with your evolving needs and the changing landscape of your electrical business.

Is Electrical Contractor Insurance Mandatory?

While not all types of electrical insurance are legally required, certain types are mandatory:

Employers’ Liability Insurance is compulsory if you employ staff. It ensures you meet your legal obligations and safeguards your employees.

Public Liability Insurance may be required by certain clients or trade associations as part of your contractual obligations. While it’s not legally mandatory, it is a fundamental aspect of your business structure to protect against liability.

Having the right insurance can reassure clients, fulfil legal requirements, and protect your business from financial setbacks and legal troubles.

What Does Public Liability Insurance Cover?

Public Liability Insurance for electricians provides coverage for various scenarios, including:

Property Damage Claims: If your work leads to damage to a client’s property, this insurance will cover the cost of repairs and restoration.

Injury to Third Parties: In the unfortunate event that a client or a member of the public is injured due to your work, this insurance covers compensation claims, legal fees, and medical expenses.

Given the potential risks and hazards associated with electrical work, Public Liability Insurance is an indispensable safeguard.

What Does Employers’ Liability Insurance Cover?

Employers’ Liability Insurance serves a distinct purpose by covering:

Injuries or Illnesses to Employees: This insurance covers the costs associated with injuries or illnesses your employees sustain while working for your business. It provides financial protection for both you and your employees.

Legal Expenses and Compensation Costs: If an employee makes a claim, Employers’ Liability Insurance ensures that you have the financial resources to cover legal expenses and compensation costs.

This type of insurance is not just a legal obligation but also a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure the well-being of your staff.

How Much Does Electrical Insurance Cost?

The cost of electrical insurance can vary significantly based on several factors, including:

The type and level of coverage you choose. More comprehensive coverage often comes with a higher premium.

The nature of your electrical work, whether it’s domestic or commercial, and the potential risks involved.

The number of employees in your business. Employing staff increases the complexity of your insurance needs.

Your geographical location. Insurance costs can vary by region, with some areas having higher risks or claims histories.

Any previous insurance claims. A history of claims may lead to higher premiums.

To find the best insurance prices, it’s advisable to obtain multiple quotes and compare them to select a policy that suits your specific needs and budget. Additionally, consider any available discounts for bundling multiple coverage types or through professional associations. Remember that, as an NICEIC registered electrical contractor, you’ll benefit from a 10% discount on the cost of your electricians insurance.

The C&G 2377-77 PAT testing course now covers a wider range of Electrical Equipment Testing (EET Testing) and was updated by City & Guilds in November 2020. The scope of the testing covered has been expanded to more than just portable equipment, it also covers fixed electrical equipment, such as any equipment with a permanent, fixed supply such as ovens and hand dryers in commercial dwellings.

In today’s modern world, electrical equipment plays a vital role in our daily lives. From computers and appliances to power tools and lighting fixtures, we rely on various electrical devices to carry out our tasks. However, ensuring the safety of these devices is of utmost importance. This is where Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) comes into play. PAT testing involves inspecting and testing electrical equipment to ensure it is safe for use. In this article, we will explore PAT testing courses led by experienced trainers from City & Guilds, their benefits for electricians and individuals interested in the electrical industry, and how this comprehensive training can help advance your career.

What is PAT Testing and why does it matter?

PAT testing is the process of inspecting and testing electrical equipment to ensure its safety for use. It involves a combination of visual examinations and electrical tests to identify any potential faults or hazards that could pose risks to users.

The importance of PAT testing lies in ensuring the safety of individuals and the prevention of electrical accidents. Faulty or damaged electrical equipment can lead to electric shocks, fires, or other hazardous situations. By conducting regular PAT testing, potential risks can be identified and addressed promptly, reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

There are several key reasons why PAT testing matters:

Compliance with safety regulations: PAT testing helps individuals and organisations comply with safety regulations and legal requirements. In many countries, including the UK, employers and landlords have a duty of care to ensure the safety of their employees, tenants, and customers. Regular PAT testing demonstrates a commitment to maintaining electrical safety standards and can help meet regulatory obligations.

Risk mitigation: By identifying potential faults or hazards, PAT testing helps mitigate the risks associated with electrical equipment. It allows for the detection of issues such as damaged cables, loose connections, insulation breakdown, or faulty components that could lead to electrical shocks, fires, or other accidents. Early detection and remediation of these problems reduce the chances of incidents occurring.

Protection of individuals and property: The primary goal of PAT testing is to protect individuals and property from harm. By ensuring that electrical equipment is safe to use, the risk of electric shocks, burns, and other injuries is minimised. Additionally, preventing electrical fires caused by faulty equipment helps safeguard lives and property, reducing the potential for significant damage and loss.

Supporting duty of care: Employers, landlords, and individuals have a duty of care to provide a safe environment for those who use electrical equipment.

Are you in the UK and considering a career as an electrician? Embarking on this path can lead to a rewarding and lucrative profession. However, it’s essential to choose the right electrician course to ensure you receive the necessary training and qualifications. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the key factors to consider when choosing an electrician course, helping you make an informed choice and invest in your future.

Identify your goals and interests

Before diving into the specifics of electrician courses, take the time to identify your goals and interests. Being an electrician covers a wide range of specialist applications in commercial, industrial, and domestic sectors. It pays off to research the different types of electrical work to determine which area resonates with you the most. Consider the type of environments you prefer working in and the kind of projects that interest you. Ask yourself where you see yourself five or ten years down the line? Do you aspire to start your own electrical contracting business, work on large-scale commercial projects, or specialise in renewable energy systems?

It’s also important to consider the lifestyle you want to live and achieve within this field. Electricians often have the flexibility to work in different locations, whether it’s on construction sites, residential properties, or industrial facilities. Think about whether you prefer the structure of a 9-to-5 job or the variety and autonomy that come with being a self-employed electrician.

Having a clear vision of your future will help you choose a course that provides the necessary foundation for your career progression.

Research course types

Next, research the different types of electrician courses available, offering different levels of certification or specialisation, ranging from basic to advanced.

Pathways to qualified electrician include:

C&G 5357 Installation and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship (Funded)

C&G 5393 Domestic Electrician Apprenticeship (Funded)

C&G 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Technology

C&G 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment

Once qualified, you can look at additional courses so that you can specialise – and it really does pay off to stay with the same training provider, ensuring your training is high-quality from start to finish. Additional courses include:

Visit our electrical course page for details of all our available courses.

Check accreditation and certification

When selecting an electrician course, it’s crucial to ensure that the training provider is accredited and the qualifications they offer are recognised by industry bodies. Accreditation ensures that the course meets industry standards and that the qualifications you earn will be recognised by employers.

City & Guilds is one of the highest-regarded electrician training providers in the UK, focussing on delivering relevant experience in a superb learning environment from highly qualified trainers. Fully accredited, with a 90%+ pass rate and more people passing our courses than any other trainer in the country, it’s industry-focussed training that builds successful careers.

Read reviews and testimonials

To get a better understanding of the quality and effectiveness of a particular electrician course, read reviews and testimonials from past students. Look for testimonials on the training provider’s website or independent review platforms. Feedback from previous learners can provide valuable insights into the course’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall satisfaction level.

Choosing the right electrician course is a crucial step towards building a successful career in the field of electrical work. By identifying your goals, researching course types, checking accreditation, considering delivery methods, and scheduling options, evaluating course content, and reading reviews and testimonials, you can make an informed decision. Remember, investing in your future through proper training and qualifications is key to achieving your career aspirations as an electrician! Listen and read our countless students testimonials, real life reviews of City & Guilds training courses and facilities.

In March 2020 we launched our 4 Steps Programme to become a domestic electrician, our most comprehensive electrical course available at all 4 electrical training centres.

Once completing our Step 1 Domestic Electrician Course you’ll have the skills & knowledge necessary to set up as a domestic installer and therefore register with HRMC as a sole trader (self-employed).

If you find work through a company (i.e. a local authority) you will be set up as an employee or PAYE meaning your taxes and deductions will be paid by your employer through your salary. Many electricians, however, prefer to work for themselves and to do so there are 3 ways (source HRMC website):

Registering as a sole trader (self-employed)

Set up your own limited company

Become a partner in a business partnership

To register as a limited company or as a business partnership, we recommend completing our Step 1 to 3 Electrician Course Package. For more advice, you can always call our sales team on 0800 8564448.

Registering as a sole trader (self-employed)

You need to set up as sole trader as soon as your self-employment earning exceeded £1,000 during the last financial year.

As a sole trader, you will have the responsibility to keep a record of your earnings, invoices and expenses. You will also need to complete a yearly Self-Assessment which will calculate the amount of Income Tax and National Insurance Class 2 and Class 4 contributions.

It is a good idea to hire an accountant to help you with your bookkeeping. There are also a number of digital book-keeping options available such as QuickBooks Self Employed which allow you to keep a digital record of everything making Self-Assessment completion more straight forward (please read our other blog for further info on this and other useful electrician’s apps).

When you set up as a sole trader, you will be given 2 very important codes, make a record of these:

Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number (you will need to make tax payments, to complete your Self-Assessment and every time you need to contact HMRC)

A Government Gateway user ID (you will need this to access your online HMRC Tax Account and to complete your Self-Assessment once a year)

To get started please visit the HMRC website at this link

Registering as a limited company

In some cases, it may be beneficial to set up as a limited company. This will ensure that your business finances are separate from your personal finances.

For electricians, setting up a limited company may elevate your business status and will give you access to a wider range of credit opportunities. Limited companies also only pay 19% Corporation Tax whereas sole traders pay between 20-45% income tax on their profits.

It is a good idea to hire an accountant if you’re thinking of setting up a limited company – to find out more an dto register visit the HMRC website at this link.

Become a partner in a business partnership

In a partnership, you and your partner jointly share the responsibility of your business which include losses, bills, stock and equipment. Business partners share profits and partner pays tax on their share of the business. To set up as a business partnership you need to visit the HRMC site on this link.

N.B. We recommend seeking professional advice before setting up your own business from either HMRC or a registered accountant.

During Lockdown 3.0 electricians and other tradespeople are considered keyworkers and can continue to provide essential maintenance & repair work in people’s homes. The Government has issued some updates in relation to the safety working guidelines for the construction industry:

Further updates state that “Clinically extremely vulnerable individuals” shouldn’t be working or travelling to attend work during the national lockdown including working in other people’s homes

“Tradespeople, are you working during Lockdown 3.0” and the results are in. 85% of electricians & tradespeople who’ve taken part in our survey confirmed that they are working during this lockdown.

In April 2020, the Cabinet Office confirmed that construction workers can continue to go to work during the coronavirus pandemic in accordance with Public Health England safety guidance. Both domestic and commercial electricians are encouraged to follow strict covid-19 guidance compliance in order to stop the spread of coronavirus and to keep themselves and others safe. The key message is to continue to work if it is safe to do and follow social distancing wherever possible. There are some exceptions to this outlined below and it is clear that social distancing is not always possible in a construction environment.

Guidance for domestic electricians

Last month, the Government issued a new guidance doc (which you can view here) which makes specific reference to tradespeople working in people’s homes. Section 2 of the guidance notes are summarised below:

Work carried out in people’s homes can continue, provided that the tradesperson is well and has no symptoms

No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating

No work should be carried out by a tradesperson who has coronavirus symptoms

On entering the home you should wash your hands for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser if no facilities are available

When working in a home you should remain 2 metres away from occupants unless your work is essential for their safety

Guidance for Site & Commercial Workers

When it comes to building sites as you can imagine there is much more detailed guidance available. The Construction Leadership Council has published a detailed document covering all the precautions that must be taken to ensure safe working. Your employer should have read this document and take the appropriate action. It is highly advisable that you as a construction worker also read the document. Sites which fail to observe this set of guidance may be asked to shut down. You can read the full document here.

We have summarised some of the key points below:

Self Isolation – Following Government Guidelines on self-isolation. If you are at risk, live with someone who has symptoms or have symptoms yourself you should not travel to work and should self isolate. This means 14 days of a house member has symptoms and 7 days if you have developed symptoms.

Social distancing – Whenever possible social distancing should occur. However, the guidelines do state recognise that this is not always possible. They do state that if not possible to distance that workers should minimise the number and frequency of tasks that require workers to be closer together. They also suggest keeping to specific teams to reduce the chances of spreading the virus.

Travel – Wherever possible workers should travel in isolation and avoid public transport. Where this is not possible workers should always travel with the same individuals.

Driving at work – The vehicle should be regularly cleaned between use. If the vehicle has to be shared it should be used by the minimum number of people and if possible the same few individuals. Drivers should wash hands before and after using the vehicle and keep windows open if possible.

Site Access – Reduce the number of visitors and implement staggered starts and finish time to avoid congestion. Allow plenty of space (min of 2 meters) between all workers and all times and any driver should remain in their vehicle wherever possible.

Handwashing – Regular breaks for handwashing are encouraged as are extra washing facilities and hand sanitisers

Toilet facilities – Restrict the number of people using toilet facilities at any one time. Increased cleaning and avoiding portaloos if possible.

Canteen / Rest Areas – Areas should be increased in size if possible and regularly cleaned. Workers should be encouraged to provide their own packed lunch and refillable water bottles.

Overall the document is extremely thorough and makes a lot of common sense proposals mainly centred around careful planning, extra cleaning and trying wherever possible to implement social distancing measures.
