Introducing the 2921-34: A New Qualification for Electric Vehicle Charging Installation

To keep up with industry advancements and changing regulations, City and Guilds has replaced the 2921-31 with the new 2921-34 qualification. This updated course is designed for qualified electricians looking to specialise in electric vehicle charging installations.

Key features of the 2921-34 include:

• Alignment with industry standards: The qualification is based on the latest national occupational standards (NOS) and the TESP Electrician Plus model.
• Enhanced eligibility requirements: Only qualified electricians who meet the requirements of the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) can now enrol.
• Online assessment: The qualification is assessed through a 60-minute online multiple-choice exam focusing on design, installation, and maintenance of electric vehicle charging equipment.

The 2921-34 EV charging course will be available starting September 2024, and the 2921-31 will be discontinued in October 2024.

Entry requirements for the 2921-34 EV Charing Course

Here are a list of the pre-requisites requirements for the 2921-34. For more information or to check your eligibility, visit our website or contact our course advisors who will be happy to help.

Learners must hold one of the following:

• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment) (2357)
• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification (5357)
• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker (2356)
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification (2346)
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification (2347)
• Other Awarding Organisations equivalences will also be acceptable
• Equivalent historical qualifications (see EAS Table 4B/4C) EAS Qualifications guide August 2023 (theiet.org)

or

• ECS Gold Card (for domestic electrician), JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician Card.

For learners in Scotland:

• Any of the above or
• SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF level 7

For learners in Wales:

All learners must have achieved the above qualifications no more than 5 years prior to starting the EV charging course or there must be evidence the learner has remained current by holding the latest edition of the Wiring regulations qualification.

City and Guilds EV Charging Qualification Suite

City & Guilds Training are now offering the following EV charging qualifications which have been developed with industry experts.

• 2921-31 Design and installation of domestic and small commercial electric vehicle charging installations. (Replaced by 2921-34 from September 2024)
• 2921-32 Design and Quality Assurance of Largescale electric vehicle charging installations.
• 2921-33 Installation and maintenance of Largescale electric vehicle charging installations.
• 2921-34 Design and installation of domestic and small commercial electric vehicle charging installations. (Available from September 2024 and replaces the 2921-31)

What is an Electrician NVQ?

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based certification that proves a candidate’s competence in their profession. For electricians, the NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation/Maintenance, such as the City & Guilds 2357, is a standard requirement. This qualification demonstrates that the individual has the practical skills and knowledge necessary to perform electrical work to industry standards.

Who Is Eligible For The NVQ?

• To be eligible for this NVQ, you must be working full-time in the electrical installation industry, 
• You have achieved, or are working towards a Diploma Level 3 (such as C&G 2365, 8202, or other awarding organisation equivalents). 
• You must also hold, or be working towards, an 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.

What If I don’t have the level 3 diploma?

• If you have more than 5 years of work experience but have not completed your level 3 Diploma, you may be eligible for our Experienced Worker Assessment – please see our C&G 2346 Page for more details.

How long does the NVQ take to complete?

The length of time that the NVQ takes will depend on how quickly you can cover the different types of work required to complete all the units. As a rough guide, we find most people will complete it in 6-18 Months.

If you have been working in the industry for some time, existing jobs can be used as evidence to speed the process up. If you have a large variety of work you can complete the NVQ quicker – but if you are doing the same thing day in and day out then you will find it harder to provide the full range of evidence required.

An NVQ is essential for several reasons:

What Is a Qualified Electrician?

A qualified electrician is an individual who has attained a specific level of skills, knowledge, and behaviours that are equivalent to an industry apprenticeship standard. This can be substantiated through industry-recognised qualifications.

Once an electrician becomes qualified, many choose to obtain an ECS Gold Card. This card serves as a reliable way to demonstrate that an individual meets the criteria for being qualified to industry apprenticeship standards or their equivalent.

The primary pathway to becoming a qualified electrician is through an industry-standard apprenticeship. However, there are alternative routes available. Below, we outline the various recognised routes according to the Electrical Skills Partnership (TESP):

1. Apprenticeship
2. Diploma and NVQ Route
3. Experienced Worker Route
4. Full-Time Education (Ages 16-19)

After completing your Diploma qualifications, you’ll need to find employment in the electrical industry to progress to your NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2).

This route is particularly popular among adult learners and career changers who are committed to investing in their own training.

Qualifications Required for the Diploma Route:

1. Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365-02)
2. Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365-03)

To progress to the NVQ, you must be working in the electrical industry.

3. NVQ Level 3 in Electro-Technical Technology (C&G 2357)
4. Assessment of Competence (AM2)

Experienced Worker Assessments (EWA)

The Experienced Worker Assessment recognises occupational competence for individuals who have worked in the electrical industry for several years but haven’t completed an apprenticeship or obtained a recognized Level 3 vocational qualification.

Achieving the Experienced Worker Assessment, including the final competence assessment (AM2E(D)), qualifies applicants for an ECS gold card application. It is also considered equivalent to an industry apprenticeship according to the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification.

We offer the following Experienced Worker qualifications:

• Installation and Maintenance Electrician (C&G 2346)
• Domestic Electrician (C&G 2347)

To be eligible for the EWA, individuals must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical installations or electrical maintenance (or 3 years’ experience for the domestic route). Additionally, learners should hold at least a level 2 technical qualification and complete a skills scan to verify eligibility.

Full-Time Education (Ages 16-19)

If you are under the age of 19 and don’t have suitable employment for an apprenticeship, this classroom-based route will provide you with technical knowledge and some practical skills that you can gain at a college or training centre, with the potential for work experience or contact with employers. You’ll still need to get practical experience in the workplace before you can become a qualified electrician.

Generally, students aged 14-19 can receive funding for this route. If you are under 19 and are interested in this full-time route, you can contact your local college for more information.
