A skilled workforce required to meet demand

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining momentum, promising a cleaner and more sustainable future for transportation. As the demand for EVs surges, so too does the need for a well-equipped charging infrastructure. In turn, this infrastructure, requires a skilled workforce capable of designing, installing, and maintaining EV charging stations.

To meet this growing demand, City & Guilds has introduced a range of EV charging qualifications. These qualifications are designed to equip electricians with the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to excel in this emerging field. By investing in these qualifications, professionals can position themselves at the forefront of the EV revolution and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Introducing the 2921-34: A New Qualification for Electric Vehicle Charging Installation

Key features of the 2921-34 include:

Alignment with industry standards: The qualification is based on the latest national occupational standards (NOS) and the TESP Electrician Plus model.

Enhanced eligibility requirements: Only qualified electricians who meet the requirements of the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) can now enrol.

Online assessment: The qualification is assessed through a 60-minute online multiple-choice exam focusing on design, installation, and maintenance of electric vehicle charging equipment.

The 2921-34 EV charging course will be available starting September 2024, and the 2921-31 will be discontinued in October 2024.

Becoming a qualified electrician in the UK is a rewarding career choice, offering diverse opportunities and job security. One crucial step in this journey is obtaining an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in electrical installation. This article explores what an electrical NVQ entails, its importance, and how to achieve this valuable certification.

What is an Electrician NVQ?

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based certification that proves a candidate’s competence in their profession. For electricians, the NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation/Maintenance, such as the City & Guilds 2357, is a standard requirement. This qualification demonstrates that the individual has the practical skills and knowledge necessary to perform electrical work to industry standards.

Who Is Eligible For The NVQ?

To be eligible for this NVQ, you must be working full-time in the electrical installation industry,

You have achieved, or are working towards a Diploma Level 3 (such as C&G 2365, 8202, or other awarding organisation equivalents).

You must also hold, or be working towards, an 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.

What If I don’t have the level 3 diploma?

If you have more than 5 years of work experience but have not completed your level 3 Diploma, you may be eligible for our Experienced Worker Assessment – please see our C&G 2346 Page for more details.

How long does the NVQ take to complete?

The length of time that the NVQ takes will depend on how quickly you can cover the different types of work required to complete all the units. As a rough guide, we find most people will complete it in 6-18 Months.

If you have been working in the industry for some time, existing jobs can be used as evidence to speed the process up. If you have a large variety of work you can complete the NVQ quicker – but if you are doing the same thing day in and day out then you will find it harder to provide the full range of evidence required.

Why Do You Need an NVQ?

An NVQ is essential for several reasons:

Industry Recognition: It validates your competence to industry standards, enhancing your credibility and employability.

Professional Development: Completing an NVQ signifies a commitment to professional growth and a deeper understanding of electrical installation and maintenance.

ECS Gold Card Eligibility: The NVQ Level 3, along with the AM2 assessment, is a requirement for obtaining an ECS Gold Card, a vital credential for working on commercial and industrial sites.

Benefits of Completing an NVQ

Completing this NVQ, including the AM2 assessment, will allow you to apply for an ECS Gold Card which proves that you are now a qualified electrician. It also offers numerous other benefits:

Career Opportunities: Qualified electricians are in high demand across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Higher Earning Potential: Certified professionals often command higher salaries due to their verified skills.

Job Security: The qualification ensures steady employment opportunities as electrical skills are indispensable in various industries.

Professional Growth: It opens doors to further specialisation and advanced certifications, enhancing career prospects.

How to Get Started

To start your journey towards an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, follow these steps:

Complete Your Diploma: Begin with the City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas to gain fundamental knowledge and skills.

Find Employment: Secure a position in the electrical industry to gain practical experience.

Enrol in an NVQ Program: Join an NVQ program like the City & Guilds 2357 offered by City & Guilds Training – Electrical.

Build Your Portfolio: Document your practical work experience and skills.

Prepare for the AM2 Assessment: Ensure you are ready for this comprehensive final assessment.

If you want to become a qualified electrician and enjoy a rewarding career choice with numerous opportunities and job security, then one of the first steps towards this goal is obtaining a diploma in electrical installations. This article explores the importance of electrician diplomas, what they involve, and why they are the perfect starting point for your career in the electrotechnology sector.

What is an Electrician Diploma?

An electrician diploma is a formal qualification that provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to work in the electrical industry. These diplomas are designed to prepare individuals for further progression towards becoming fully qualified electricians. We offer three main diploma options:

C&G 2365 Level 2 Diploma: This course covers the basics of electrical installations, including safety regulations, wiring principles, and fundamental electrical science.

C&G 2365 Level 3 Diploma: This advanced course builds on the Level 2 diploma, focusing on more complex electrical installation tasks, testing, and fault diagnosis.

C&G 2365 Level 2 & 3 Diploma Package: This comprehensive package combines both levels, offering a seamless progression from basic to advanced electrical installation skills.

What is Involved When Doing a Diploma?

Completing a diploma in electrical installations involves a combination of theoretical learning and practical training. Here’s what you can expect:

Level 2 Diploma

Basic Electrical Principles: Learn about electrical circuits, wiring systems, and safety regulations.

Installation and Maintenance: Learn advanced techniques for installing and maintaining electrical systems.

Testing and Inspection: Develop skills in testing and inspecting electrical installations to ensure compliance with regulations.

What is the Difference Between Level 2 and Level 3?

The primary difference between the Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas lies in the depth of knowledge and complexity of the skills taught:

Level 2 Diploma: Provides foundational knowledge and basic skills in electrical installations. It’s ideal for beginners or those new to the electrical industry.

Level 3 Diploma: Builds on the Level 2 diploma, offering more advanced training in electrical installation, maintenance, testing, and fault diagnosis. It’s suited for those who have completed the Level 2 diploma or have some prior experience in the field.

Becoming a qualified electrician in the UK offers a rewarding career with numerous opportunities for upskilling. This guide will explore the various routes you could take to become an electrician in the UK.

What Is a Qualified Electrician?

A qualified electrician is an individual who has attained a specific level of skills, knowledge, and behaviours that are equivalent to an industry apprenticeship standard. This can be substantiated through industry-recognised qualifications.

Once an electrician becomes qualified, many choose to obtain an ECS Gold Card. This card serves as a reliable way to demonstrate that an individual meets the criteria for being qualified to industry apprenticeship standards or their equivalent.

The primary pathway to becoming a qualified electrician is through an industry-standard apprenticeship. However, there are alternative routes available. Below, we outline the various recognised routes according to the Electrical Skills Partnership (TESP):

Apprenticeship

Diploma and NVQ Route

Experienced Worker Route

Full-Time Education (Ages 16-19)

What We Offer: Electrical Training with City & Guilds

At City & Guilds Training | Electrical, we specialise in delivering high-quality training to help you become a qualified electrician. Here’s an overview of our offerings:

Electrical Apprenticeships

Our electrical apprenticeship program is fully funded, allowing you to earn while you learn. You won’t be expected to pay anything for your electrical training.

Gain essential skills through a combination of on-the-job learning in your workplace and structured lessons at our training centre.

There are no upper-age limits for apprenticeships; it’s never too late to start your journey.

We offer two apprenticeships:

Installation/Maintenance Electrician (C&G 5357) (Approx. 4 years)

Domestic Electrician (C&G 5393) (Approx. 3 years)

Diploma Route

The City & Guilds 2365 Diploma qualifications are designed for individuals who aspire to work in the electrotechnology sector.

These qualifications serve as a solid foundation for further progression toward becoming a fully qualified electrician.

After completing your Diploma qualifications, you’ll need to find employment in the electrical industry to progress to your NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2).

The NVQ assesses your practical performance on-site, while the AM2 assesses your skills in a controlled environment.

This route is particularly popular among adult learners and career changers who are committed to investing in their own training.

Qualifications Required for the Diploma Route:

Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365-02)

Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (C&G 2365-03)

To progress to the NVQ, you must be working in the electrical industry.

NVQ Level 3 in Electro-Technical Technology (C&G 2357)

Assessment of Competence (AM2)

Experienced Worker Assessments (EWA)

The Experienced Worker Assessment recognises occupational competence for individuals who have worked in the electrical industry for several years but haven’t completed an apprenticeship or obtained a recognized Level 3 vocational qualification.

Achieving the Experienced Worker Assessment, including the final competence assessment (AM2E(D)), qualifies applicants for an ECS gold card application. It is also considered equivalent to an industry apprenticeship according to the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification.

We offer the following Experienced Worker qualifications:

Installation and Maintenance Electrician (C&G 2346)

Domestic Electrician (C&G 2347)

To be eligible for the EWA, individuals must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical installations or electrical maintenance (or 3 years’ experience for the domestic route). Additionally, learners should hold at least a level 2 technical qualification and complete a skills scan to verify eligibility.

Full-Time Education (Ages 16-19)

If you are under the age of 19 and don’t have suitable employment for an apprenticeship, this classroom-based route will provide you with technical knowledge and some practical skills that you can gain at a college or training centre, with the potential for work experience or contact with employers. You’ll still need to get practical experience in the workplace before you can become a qualified electrician.

Generally, students aged 14-19 can receive funding for this route. If you are under 19 and are interested in this full-time route, you can contact your local college for more information.

Are you in the UK and considering a career as an electrician? Embarking on this path can lead to a rewarding and lucrative profession. However, it’s essential to choose the right electrician course to ensure you receive the necessary training and qualifications. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the key factors to consider when choosing an electrician course, helping you make an informed choice and invest in your future.

Identify your goals and interests

Before diving into the specifics of electrician courses, take the time to identify your goals and interests. Being an electrician covers a wide range of specialist applications in commercial, industrial, and domestic sectors. It pays off to research the different types of electrical work to determine which area resonates with you the most. Consider the type of environments you prefer working in and the kind of projects that interest you. Ask yourself where you see yourself five or ten years down the line? Do you aspire to start your own electrical contracting business, work on large-scale commercial projects, or specialise in renewable energy systems?

It’s also important to consider the lifestyle you want to live and achieve within this field. Electricians often have the flexibility to work in different locations, whether it’s on construction sites, residential properties, or industrial facilities. Think about whether you prefer the structure of a 9-to-5 job or the variety and autonomy that come with being a self-employed electrician.

Having a clear vision of your future will help you choose a course that provides the necessary foundation for your career progression.

Research course types

Next, research the different types of electrician courses available, offering different levels of certification or specialisation, ranging from basic to advanced.

Pathways to qualified electrician include:

C&G 5357 Installation and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship (Funded)

C&G 5393 Domestic Electrician Apprenticeship (Funded)

C&G 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Technology

Once qualified, you can look at additional courses so that you can specialise – and it really does pay off to stay with the same training provider, ensuring your training is high-quality from start to finish. Additional courses include:

When selecting an electrician course, it’s crucial to ensure that the training provider is accredited and the qualifications they offer are recognised by industry bodies. Accreditation ensures that the course meets industry standards and that the qualifications you earn will be recognised by employers.

Read reviews and testimonials

To get a better understanding of the quality and effectiveness of a particular electrician course, read reviews and testimonials from past students. Look for testimonials on the training provider’s website or independent review platforms. Feedback from previous learners can provide valuable insights into the course’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall satisfaction level.
